Black Mountain Boys
Ashkenaz Music and Dance Community Center, Berkeley, CA 3/18/13
Rarity: The Black Mountain Boys at the Ashkenaz 40th Anniversary
The event was the Berkeley venue’s 40th anniversary, and it marked the start, 50 years earlier, of Jerry Garcia’s first bluegrass band. The Black Mountain Boys appearing in 2013 featured founders Eric Thompson on mando and David Nelson on guitar. Taking up the banjo part was Eric Shubb, an old musical friend of Garcia’s. The band was rounded out by fiddlers Paul Shelasky and Suzy Thompson, and bluegrass bassist Paul Knight.
Who knows when the Black Mountain Boys will get together again? And in the company of a recorder? Grab this one for posterity.

Sycamore Slough String Band
First Rehearsals (2012)
Sycamore Slough String Band is an acoustic quartet founded on a mutual love of Grateful Dead music. Instigator David Gans had the brilliant idea of holding the band’s first rehearsals in a recording studio in order to capture the magic that everyone knew would transpire. The song list has already jumped the fence into other works, but the repertoire will remain Dead-centric for the most part. The Dead’s “concerted sense of quest” informs SSSB’s musical interactions, and a powerful vocal ensemble rides high atop those grooves.
David Gans & Eric Rawlins
Desert Wind, Rollin’ River
David Gans and Eric Rawlins have been making music together, mostly at parties and occasionally in public, for more than 20 years. Recorded before a live audience in David’s living room in Oakland, this album includes original compositions and many of their favorite songs by others and highlights the warmth of their musical friendship over time.
The Stage Stop, Rollinsville, CO 3/26/11
David Gans rolls through Colorado periodically, and he always has something new cooking, musically. On this night, with the snow flying outside this rustic venue in the foothills, David warmed the audience with his guitar looping and quiet vocals.

For four years, he’s recruited friends and bandmates to a musical Bob Dylan Birthday Party, a show for 100 fans with all proceeds donated to the Oral Cancer Foundation.
